What Is Line Boring and Why Is It Important?

Proper main bore alignment is one of the foundations of a reliable heavy-duty diesel engine rebuild.

When most people think about rebuilding a diesel engine, they think about cylinders, pistons, cylinder heads, or crankshafts. One area that receives far less attention is the main bore running through the center of the engine block.

That bore supports the crankshaft. If the main bearing saddles are not properly aligned, the crankshaft and bearings are being asked to operate on a foundation that is not straight.

That is where line boring — and, in some applications, line honing — becomes important.

What Is the Main Bore?

The main bore is formed by the main bearing saddles in the engine block and the main bearing caps. Together, they create the series of precisely aligned bores that support the crankshaft main bearings.

Those bores must be the correct size, shape, and alignment. Just as important, they must share the proper centerline from the front of the block to the rear.

A crankshaft does not care how good the rest of the engine looks. If the main bores are not straight, you do not have a good foundation for a rebuild.

What Causes Main Bore Problems?

Heavy-duty diesel engine blocks operate under enormous loads. Over time, several conditions can affect the main bore, including bearing failures, overheating, cap movement or fretting, distortion, previous machining, and severe engine failures.

Sometimes the problem is obvious. Other times, the block looks perfectly serviceable until the main bore is measured.

That is why inspection and measurement come before machining.

What Does Line Boring Do?

Line boring restores the main bearing bores so they are properly sized and aligned on a common centerline. The operation uses precision tooling that passes through the main bore and machines the required areas in relation to one another.

The objective is not simply to make the holes larger or make them look clean.

The objective is to restore the geometry required for the crankshaft and main bearings to operate correctly.

Line Boring vs. Line Honing

The terms line boring and line honing are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are different machining operations.

Line boring removes material with a cutting tool and is commonly used when more correction is required. Line honing uses abrasive stones to remove smaller amounts of material and can be used to establish final size and finish in applications where that process is appropriate.

The correct process depends on the engine, the amount of correction required, the available repair specifications, and the condition of the block.

Why Main Bore Alignment Matters

The crankshaft rides on a thin film of oil between the crank journals and the main bearings. Proper bearing clearance and alignment are critical to maintaining that oil film.

If the main bore geometry is wrong, the engine may experience uneven bearing loading, incorrect oil clearances, abnormal bearing wear, crankshaft binding, lubrication problems, or premature failure.

New bearings cannot correct an alignment problem in the block. The foundation has to be right first.

Not Every Block Needs to Be Line Bored

This is an important point: line boring is not automatically required simply because an engine is being rebuilt.

If the main bore measures correctly, is properly aligned, and shows no condition requiring correction, there is no benefit in machining it just for the sake of performing another operation.

Experience determines whether that cut should be made in the first place.

Understanding failure patterns, measuring the block correctly, recognizing cap movement or distortion, and determining the proper repair procedure are all part of the job.

That combination of measurement, equipment, and experience is what turns machine work into a reliable engine repair.

Start With a Straight Foundation

A heavy-duty diesel engine rebuild is only as good as the foundation supporting it. The crankshaft, bearings, connecting rods, pistons, and every other rotating component depend on correct block geometry.

Line boring is not something every engine block needs. But when main bore alignment is out of specification, correcting it properly can make the difference between a dependable rebuild and an expensive failure.

Machine Shop Tip

Do not assume new main bearings will correct a main bore problem. Bearings follow the geometry of the block. If the foundation is out of alignment, the cause needs to be corrected before the engine goes back together.
